A new suite of ministry – theology courses commences in mid-2006 with many new options and FEE-Help is available!

Why study Ministry – Theology at Avondale?

Studying Ministry – Theology draws upon a wide range of disciplines. It studies the biblical text – which plays such an important part in the Christian’s life – in its social, historical theological and literary contexts.

• It also examines the history of the Christian community and its traditions because the context in which doctrinal reflection develops needs to be understood for continuing insights
• and learns from the approaches developed in the social sciences (eg psychology and sociology) because they throw light on how human beings interpret themselves
• in addition, it takes seriously the challenges of contemporary society including trends towards agnosticism and atheism.

It trains students to minister to the needs of individuals and society as a whole in either local congregations a laypersons or as employed ministers.

Avondale offers a range of courses in ministry and theology to prepare both future professional ministers and theologically-educated laypersons.

Graduate entry courses

Graduate Diplomas

Avondale also offers two one-year graduate diplomas for those who already hold a bachelors degree. When combined the two graduate diplomas offer an alternative pathway into the employed ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist church. They are designed for graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree.

• Graduate Diploma of TheologyFor those who graduates wish to study the theological disciplines for either personal interest or as a possible academic career in theology. By itself, it does not provide a recognised pathway into the employed ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist church.
• Graduate Diploma of MinistryFor those who graduates wish to study basic theology and ministry and is designed for those who wish to serve as educated and skilled laypersons in a local congregation. By itself, it does not provide a recognised pathway into the employed ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist church.

Undergraduate courses

Avondale also offers a number of undergraduate courses in Ministry – Theology

Bachelor of Theology/Bachelor of Ministry

This four-year BTh/BMin combined degree is designed specifically to prepare students for ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist church. It is both theological and vocational in nature. The course provides students with a foundation for theology and ministry and the resources with which to minister as a employed minister in the Seventh-day Adventist church.
