Facilities

Avondale has a wide range of academic facilities to help enhance your learning experience. The Lake Macquarie campus houses the following teaching areas:

  • three lecture theatres, seating 100-200 students
  • 31 classrooms
  • 11 computer laboratories
  • 26 other laboratories and special teaching areas
The campus also has six halls that seat between 200-1800 people, used for large gatherings, concerts and recitals. There are also a number of venues specific to the various faculties.ARTSThe Faculty of Arts have access to technical process areas, workshops, machine shops, craft laboratories, art studios, darkrooms, pottery facilities, a textile laboratory, and home economics facilities. Below are some area specific facilities:Radio production - a small self-operating studio with a five-station audio editing suite is set up for radio program mixing. The control room and smaller, radio production studio are both fully digital and contain the latest digital technology equipment.Video production - a seven station video production editing suite with a five-station audio editing suite is set up for video production. The video editing suite utilises the editing software Final Cut Pro and Cool Edit Pro.Music—a digital music laboratory, two studios for large and medium ensembles, and teaching and practice studiosEducationThe Faculty of Education have technical process areas, workshops, machine shops, craft laboratories, art studios, darkrooms, pottery facilities, a textile laboratory, and home economics facilities available to their students. Education students also have access to facilities for recording and playback of mini lessons, to help students with their teaching technique. NursingThe Faculty of Nursing and Health has a laboratory on the Lake Macquarie campus for first-year nursing students. Students also have access to the library and clinical facilities of the Sydney Adventist Hospital.ScienceThe School of Science has laboratories for general, organic and radiation chemistry, spectroscopy, general physics, advanced physics, general biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology. Avondale is well located for the study of field biology and geography, situated within a few kilometres of coastal sand dunes, mangroves, coastal lakes, fresh water aquatic environments, warm temperate and sub-tropical forests, as well as the major urban areas of Newcastle and Sydney. While Avondale does not operate a field station, frequent trips are taken to areas of geographical and biological interest, including interstate excursions. Ministry and TheologyThe School of Ministry and Theology has recording and playback facilities for students developing skills in pastoral communication, preaching and pastoral counselling. The Avondale Heritage and Special Collections centre is another great resource for Ministry and Theology students, with its vast collection of Seventh-day Adventist Church documents, films, photographs, charts, manuscripts, videos, models and artefacts.

Libraries

The Avondale Library on the Lake Macquarie campus gives free membership to current students, staff and alumni, and includes a wide range of resources for loan. The library also includes study rooms for private and group use, and offers tutorials on referencing and various software programs both in person and online.

IT is available to assist with student email, student accounts and password reset, accessing wi-fi, accessing Moodle, and setting up printing.
