Equity Access

Students who wish to seek special academic entry admission on the basis of economic or social disadvantage will need to address the criteria below.

Special consideration may apply to a person:

  1. From low socio-economic background who is:

    • In receipt of a health card, sole parent or invalid pension, or some other form of benefit; or
    • Dependent on parents or care-givers who are in receipt of a health card, sole parent or invalid pension, or some other form of benefit; or
    • Receiving Homeless Austudy or Independent Austudy in lieu of social security with no other means of support; or
    • Dependent student in receipt of maximum Austudy/Abstudy for living-at-home or living-away-from-home allowance; or
    • Dependent on parents or caregivers who are in receipt of maximum Austudy/Abstudy for living-at-home or living-away-from-home allowance; or
    • Currently unemployed, or their parents or caregivers are currently unemployed. In the case of the latter, applicants are required to provide evidence that they were still legally dependent upon their parents or caregivers In order to verify employment status, students are required to provide relevant documentation from CES or other relevant Government departments or designated agencies; or
    • Able to provide other evidence to verify their eligibility under this category

  2. Of Non-English Speaking Background

    • Was born overseas and arrived in Australia less than 10 years ago; and
    • Has passed Year 12 English or the International English Language Test;
    • Speaks an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islands language as their first language.

  3. Who has experienced family disruption which has interrupted schooling

    Has an immediate family member who is very ill or has recently died and this has interrupted schooling. Similarly recent divorce or separation of parents.

  4. Who changed high schools several times

    Has missed lengthy periods of schooling or changed schools several times because family has moved from place to place

  5. Had little encouragement to continue study

    Family has not supported the student continuing to tertiary education and student feels he/she have to "go it alone", such a student may be eligible

  6. Worked to assist family

    Had to work reasonably long hours outside of school/study hours to supplement the family income

  7. Who had limited home study conditions

    Living conditions may be crowded or excessively noisy, or family relationships may be such that the home environment is not conducive to study

  8. Responsible for primary care of children

    May be solely responsible for the care of their own children or have to care for siblings for long periods of time while parents are at work thus reducing time for study

  9. Attended a disadvantaged or remote area school

    The school attended for senior schooling has been classified by the Education Department as Disadvantaged or Remote Area

  10. Experienced excessive travel time to school

  11. Suffered personal illness, injury or disability

    May have been seriously affected by glandular fever, asthma, diabetes, or another chronic illness during Years 11 and 12. May have a disability such as impaired vision or hearing, paraplegia or quadriplegia or cerebral palsy

  12. Of Refugee Status

    Determined by the Department of Immigration as a Refugee

  13. Other

    Not all disadvantage experience can be classified under the above headings so please state the circumstances that have caused disadvantage in preparing for and/or accessing tertiary study.
