Avondale Foundation has donated five truckloads of plants to Avondale for the college's Lake Macquarie campus.
The plants will help the college achieve its previous landscape goals. The new gardens in front of the library as well as the soon-to-be shrub garden in front of men's residence Watson Hall are part of these goals. "We are following the plans from 15 years ago," says campus supervisor and projects officer Bruce Cantrill.
The new improvements extend to Central Road. Avondale has arranged for a double avenue of trees on both sides of the road. "The first row will be London plane trees," says Bruce. "The other row will be Manchurian pear."
Although neither tree will produce fruit, Bruce expects they will give beautiful colour. The Manchurian pear is known for is scented white flowers in the spring. The plane tree is highly tolerant of wind, drought and pollution. It is also known for its canopy look near roads and footpaths.
