Ninety-seven Avondale students have received scholarships and awards for 2008 during forum on the college's Lake Macquarie campus on March 12.

More than 20 types of scholarships and awards were presented, including the President's Award, President's Scholarships and Avondale Foundation Academic Excellence Scholarships.

The President's Award is a one-off award worth $3000. Chelsea Humble received the award, which will no longer be on offer after 2008.

Thirteen students received the President's Scholarships. This scholarship is awarded to Australian and New Zealand applicants in selected secondary schools who anticipate a tertiary entrance rank in the top 20 per cent, or are placed among the best academic performers in their class, and who are a peer leader, making an outstanding contribution in their school, church, community or family.

The Avondale Foundation Academic Excellence Scholarships are awarded to Australian and New Zealand applicants who received a tertiary entrance rank in the top 10 per cent of the state, territory or country and are enrolled in a three- or four-year degree program. Fourteen students received the award, which is worth up to $27,500. The scholarship is also the only award redeemable by cash.

The college introduced three new scholarships. The Campus Life Scholarships focus on an individual's positive contribution and impact to their school campus. The Community Service Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate an active involvement in service and their community. The Leadership Scholarships look at an applicant's active involvement in leadership activities in their school, church or community. Ten of these scholarships are available each year for new students and two for returning students.

Avondale has had a large increase in the amount of scholarships and awards on offer. Marketing officer Nadine Clark, who assisted in the presentation of several of the awards, shared some advice for future applicants. "Apply for anything you are eligible for," said Nadine. "There's a lot of money up for grabs."
