Avondale College student Chris Koelma launched his debut album in the rotunda in the library on the Lake Macquarie campus on March 11.
The self-titled, nine-track album features Chris' compositions for solo bass guitar as well as jazz/funk/fusion pieces with his band. The album took six months to complete, and Chris said the process was relatively stress-free. "[It] was really relaxed," said Chris. "It was a fun process."
Dr Robb Dennis, senior lecturer in music, was thrilled when Chris decided to record the album. "It's good for him to have a folio," said Robb, "plus, it's a great way for him to bust out onto the scene."
At the launch, Chris played several of the songs featured on his album, displaying his skills on the bass. Chris slapped, tapped and strummed to the delight of students and library staff members.
Robb, who has taught and mentored Chris for a number of years, commented on Chris' ability. "Chris' talent is unique. There are many bass players but not many play it like a guitar."
Chris is well aware of his distinctive style. "Bass guitars are not normally up the front," said Chris. "But here, it's the lead."
The album itself was a part of Chris' studies. At the launch, Chris revealed the album's other purpose. In June and July 2007, 12 Avondale students went to an orphanage and school in India.
"I didn't want to sell it to just make money," said Chris. "[So] a part of each sale of the CD will go towards the school in India."
Chris' album is available in the bookshop on Avondale's Lake Macquarie campus.
