Cancer research, the Salvos, students with a disability and a women's refuge will benefit from a week of fundraising on Avondale College's Lake Macquarie campus.
A walkathon organised by student mission club COSMOS on Sunday (May 25) will raise about $400 for the SDA School for the Speech and Hearing Impaired, located in Kollegal, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. First-year nursing student Kayla Davey (pictured, left) led 13 other students on the 25-kilometre tramp along the coast from Swansea Heads to Birdie Beach. "Our legs were quite sore that night, but it was a lot of fun," says Kayla.
So was Trivia Night, organised by Krystle Praestiin and Student Associated Ministries on Saturday (May 24) as a fundraiser for the Southlakes Women's Refuge. "The rumour is the table of academics [including Lyell Heise, Robyn Priestly, Carolyn Rickett and Doug Robertson] bought their win," says Student Services director Kevin Judge.
Those with a little more honesty volunteered to collect for the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal earlier in the day, raising $1300.
Also appealing, biscuits and hot chocolate, as staff members and students raised $175 for the Cancer Council during Australia's Biggest Morning Tea on Wednesday (May 21).
