Careers advisers from the Central Coast held their first professional development meeting of the year on Avondale College's Lake Macquarie campus this past Tuesday (March 4).
Coordinator Phillip Williamson, careers adviser at Northlakes High School and a former education student at Avondale, speaks highly of the college's hospitality. "I have received nothing but positive feedback," he writes in an email to marketing officer Nadine Clark. "Many [of the advisers] have never been to Avondale and were amazed at the quality of the facilities and overall study environment."
Twenty-five careers advisers, all belonging to the Central Coast Careers Advisers Network, visited the college. Marketing Services shouted lunch in the cafeteria before taking the advisers on a tour of Andre, Ella Boyd and Watson Halls, the Chan Shan Auditorium, the That Design studio, College Hall and Avondale Library. The tour also included a presentation on courses, costs and points of difference.
The network usually conducts its meetings in schools, with each school taking turns at hosting the meeting. However, the network decided to do something a little different this year. "One of the suggestions from this past year was that we move our meetings out of schools, and take the show on the road, so to speak," says Williamson. "[This enables] us to visit numerous sites, further building vital links with industry."
The network is comprised of careers advisers from schools on the Central Coast, the regional vocational education consultant and representatives from TAFE New South Wales's Hunter Institute, the University of Newcastle (Ourimbah campus), Youth Connections and the Careers Expo Committee. Additional speakers came from Breakthru Employment Services and the Australian Reptile Park.
