DATING FOR DUMMIES
Have you ever wondered how much you can find out about a person in 30 seconds? Well, the Student Activities Committee (SAC) gave us the opportunity to answer that question this past Wednesday evening. The event, called [insert drum roll here] Dating for dummies, was conducted in speed dating style. You sat opposite a partner, talked madly for 15 seconds, listened intently for 15 seconds, then moved to the next partner. Competitions and games broke up the dating. The SAC team described the event as a great success, and Tattler agrees. Everyone who attended received plenty of laughs (and the occasional phone number).
THE BI-LO RUN
What is it about the Bi-Lo supermarket in Morisset that attracts students--like moths to a flame--at all hours of the day and usually the night? Is it the cheaper prices, the lack of other entertainment or the security guard with the huge moustache? Most students Tattler talked to say Bi-Lo offers everything they want, and at a reasonable price. However, the biggest attraction is Bi-Lo's trading hours--it's open 24 hours a day. So, whenever the craving for doughnuts or copious amounts of Coca-Cola strikes--and it is most often between 11 pm and 2 am--students can do what is affectionately known as a "Bi-Lo Run." Oh, and the Merv Hughes look-alike? "He just wants to look tough, but he's really just a big softie," says Tattler's source (thanks, Kylie).
STRETCHING THAT DOLLAR FURTHER
Avondale College is bursting at the seams, full of wide-eyed first years straight out of home and high school. How are they handling managing their own finances for the first time? Most Tatttler talked to have created budgets to make their meagre savings stretch as far as possible. Many have found work on campus. Money-saving tips have included (and Tattler does not necessarily endorse this view) skipping breakfast and shopping regularly at a reject or op-shop. One student, a first year named Emma, is adjusting to life without much money--she can't afford to shop at her favourite stores and now keeps an eye out for sales, any sales.
