He may have beaten across the line, but senior health and exercise science lecturer Dr Darren Morton still finished first in the aquathon on Monday.

First-year arts and teaching student Chris Starrett crossed the line ahead of Morton but completed the race with fellow first year Joel Slade (general studies). The two were the first male team to finish, in 14.16 minutes. Morton finished in 14.19 minutes, about a minute ahead of another first year, Laiton Turnham (outdoor recreation), the first male student (15.12 minutes).

The rivalry between Starrett and Morton is growing. Starrett finished second--in record time--to Morton in the first of this year's Hall to Gate Runs. Morton recognises Starrett, and Turnham's, athletic talent. "Chris and Laiton are the best runners I've seen come through college. No question."

Third-year education student Candace Macrae, who won the race this past year and the Hall to Gate Run on February 28 this year, finished as the first female, in 18.56 minutes. Second-year aviation student Darren Adonis and first-year general studies student Rowena Gilbett (16.00 minutes) finished as the first mixed team.

Twenty competitors entered the aquathon, completing a 300-metre swim before a three-kilometre run.
