Students on Avondale College's Lake Macquarie campus have received 2500 biscuits from the president's wife to help them through the so-called "mad month of May."
Wendy Cox shared her idea with the deaconesses at Avondale College Seventh-day Adventist Church who agreed to help organise the drive. "We felt we needed to help the students feel the church cared about them," says Wendy. "They're part of our community, and this helps show support from their church community."
Each student in the residences received a pack of six biscuits baked especially for them, with individual dietary needs taken into consideration. "I thought it was very appropriately timed," says Makulsha D?Costa, a first-year Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching (honours) student. "It was nice to have something sweet in the mailbox."
"The girls were were totally blown away," says director of women?s residence Deirdre Hough, Shane Roberts, assistant director of men?s residence, received a similar response. "The guys were rapped," he says, "particularly when they realised the biscuits were made for them by the church."
More than 50 students showed their appreciation by signing a large card displayed in the foyer of the church this past Saturday (May 24). About the same number (43) of church members volunteered. Some baked 100 or more biscuits.
