It's that time of the year, at least on campus, where, at the end of the week, you'll hear a collective sigh. That's a sign that mid-semester recess has come, a much-needed release of tension before the final stretch of the year.
Even for those who will use the break for catch up or for preparation, this time will be more relaxed. You own the time. That's what makes the difference.
So often time owns us. The schedule is tight, life is busy, and the demands keep stacking up. Pressure. Tension. It's like a spring sprung tight. Too much and it's, "Aaargh!"
Even if you're enjoying your work or study, the tension's there. And it isn't always possible to find a couple of week's breathing space.
What we can do is un-spring the spring for brief periods. Make sure you have an evening each week that's just yours. Go to a parade. Plan a party a couple of times a year, just to have a party.
In between times, we can always snatch moments--five minutes for a fast walk, three minutes to pull the blinds, lock the door, turn up the music and dance like Peter Garrett (no coordination needed), less than 30 seconds to phone a loved one to say, "I love you," and hang up.
"Be still, and know that I am God!" (Psalm 46:10, NLT) is also helpful because it's said in the context of God being a refuge and strength, and a fortress amid chaos. He will end all war. So, be still.
It's about taking time to pause from whatever battle we're fighting. And it's a time to recognise that peace can be found in His presence.
If you're able to have a break, enjoy. If not, make sure you take time for life.
