Final-year arts (communication) and business students travelled "Into the Wild" to prepare for the "corporate jungle" during a job-seeking skills seminar at Avondale College Seventh-day Adventist Church on Thursday (October 23).
Organised by students from the public relations events management class, the seminar featured information sessions and workshops targeted at graduating students looking for their first job.
The morning information sessions and workshops were hosted by Colin Clark and Korey Dowling from Adventist Employment, Emma Deaves from Complete Staff Solutions, and Melody Danswan and Coral Reynolds, both sessional lecturers at Avondale. The sessions included information on job personalities, the employment process, the interview process and CV writing.
"[These] were very informative and very helpful," said Ursula Borgas, a final-year communication student. "There was a good group of people and we had a great time."
The afternoon workshop gave the students an opportunity to participate in a mock job interview with a panel of interviewers, which included three of the guest speakers, a former Avondale student and an Avondale sessional lecturer. Students were asked typical job interview questions as they competed for the fictional job at hand.
"The practical session was really helpful. It was a great experience that was very educational," said Megan Galusha, also a final-year communication student.
This was the first time that students from the Faculty of Business and Information Technology had joined the event since it began in 2005. "Every student needs that kind of information as they are graduating," said acting dean Don Dickins. "The day was very well run, with very relevant information for all graduating students."
