Once upon a time (Sunday, November 2, to be precise), in the not so far away land of Ettalong, the students of Avondale College slipped on their best fairytale outfits and attended the annual Jacaranda Banquet. All were excited--they would finally get to see the yearbook and count how many times they were pictured among its pages.
After mingling then eating then mingling some more, the students took their seats for the all-important presentation and dedication. Daniela Brown, the Jacaranda photographer, then announced the name of retiring president Dr John Cox as the dedicatee. "John, on behalf of Avondale College, we would like to honour you with the dedication of the 2008 Jacaranda and pray that your happily-ever-after will be as fulfilling as your time with us," she said in her speech.
As John took the stage, he received a standing ovation. "I am surprised, overwhelmed and honoured," he said. "I've enjoyed Avondale. It's been such a big part of my life." John also wanted to congratulate the Jacaranda team for organising the banquet and producing the yearbook, describing both as "outstanding."
Sara Tui Miles, who spent about 300 hours editing the yearbook, said the team dedicated Jacaranda to John in recognition of his 30 years of service to Avondale.
Dr Jane Fernandez wrote the dedication. "It is apt that a Jacaranda theme like 'Seasons' should be dedicated to Dr John Cox. This dedication is both a celebration of achievement and a signature of gratitude to a man whose career spans several seasons at Avondale College."
