Avondale College staff members have joined students to improve their health and fitness while furthering their education.

Eleven staff members on the Lake Macquarie campus have enrolled in the education subject, Fitness, Food and Health, this semester. The lecturer is Dr Darren Morton, an exercise scientist who serves as a senior lecturer in the faculty. "Getting fit is a common New Year's resolution but a not so common New Year's reality," he writes in an email to staff members to promote the subject. "For those who made that promise to themselves but have been a little slow getting started, I would like to offer some assistance."

Among the staff members taking on the challenge are Lesley Coverdale, an assistant in Human Resources, and Lynette Frazer, a technician in Avondale Library. "I want to be strong into old age," said Lesley when asked why she enrolled in the subject. Lynette said she wants to learn more about health and fitness, improve her fitness and interact with students.

The subject includes a range of physical activities, culminating in a 10-kilometre run.
