He came, they came, they asked and he answered. Avondale College president Dr Ray Roennfeldt spoke directly to students on the Lake Macquarie campus as part of a Q'n'A with ASA this past Tuesday (April 28).
The event, organised by Avondale Student Association (ASA), encouraged students to ask any question of Ray, who then gave impromptu answers. "It was a good forum for students to voice their opinions and have them heard," says Makushla D'Costa, a Bachelor of Teaching (secondary) student. "There was a sense that we were being listened to and that something will be done about the issues that were raised."
ASA president Natalie Verhoeven says the event is an example of how the student association and the college administration are working toward effective communication and progress. "This is a public way of showing we are open to suggestions and are looking out for the best interests of students," says Natalie.
Students asked a range of questions, from parking on campus and food in the cafeteria to security and the financial impact of the voluntary administration of ACF Investments Ltd. "I talk to a number of students but it's good to talk to students as a group to find out overall what they want to know," says Ray.
One person asked about Ray's vision for Avondale and whether or not he feels fulfilled in his role. "My vision is for Avondale to retain what it already is, a Christian institution," he answered. "My wish is for people to come here and develop a relationship with God, make friends and receive a quality education. What I enjoy most about my position is having a closer role in shaping the future of the institution."
