Careers and Job Expo

19 September 2007

The annual Careers and Job Expo on Avondale College's Lake Macquarie campus attracted more than 300 students to the Chan Shun Auditorium this past Wednesday (September 12).

Kevin Judge, Director of student services and the organizer of the expo said, "The Focus of the expo was to provide potential employment opportunities." Mr Judge went on to say, "Some students are still unsettled as to what they want to do in future. The career expo should expose them to available opportunities and help them in their career plans."

Students found the expo helpful with second year communication student Kent Kingston saying, "It was a great idea. We need to think about career plans at the beginning of the course, so that our choice of subjects would suit the jobs we want to do in future." Second year International Development student, Michele Kerk said, "it's good to be familiar with opportunities out there. The expo was beneficial because I want to work with ADRA and they told me the types of job vacancies available."

Representatives of Seventh-day Adventist Church departments and entities joined those from other companies at the expo. Pastor Bob Bolst, director of Adventist volunteer service for the church in the South Pacific, promoted the benefits of Volunteering. "Volunteering is a great way to serve because, one, you help others, and two, you become a better person."

Louise Trigg, recruitment coordinator for Complete Staff Solutions, wanted to show students the benefits of having a part time job. She said, "We are here to help students find casual work earn some money to continue in the process of achieving their goals. We also help them to develop work ethics and learn how to relate to people in a work environment."
