Jacaranda a feast for eyes and minds

07 November 2007

Perhaps it is a bigger budget, a refinement of the graphic design program or a greater commitment from students, but the quality of Avondale College's yearbook, Jacaranda, has skyrocketed over the past four years. The 2007 edition, released at the Jac Banquet on Sunday (November 4), continues this trend.

The black, red and white colour palette--and the stickers--impressed me, as did the long overdue dedication to effervescent education lecturer Dr Jean Carter and the plethora of high-quality images and musings.

Jacaranda has changed from being simply a publication of photographs to a publication encapsulating everything that is Avondale. So, the theme of sight adopted by the editorial team this year--the tag is "seeing through students' eyes"-seems somewhat limiting. You see, no pun intended, there is more to this place than what meets the eye. Avondale makes an impact on hearts and on minds--it reaches into the emotions.

That said, Jacaranda is visually stimulating, but it should, and does, encourage a much deeper experience. It is the echo of 2007 because, while the photographs and words will fade, the memories will resonate for years.
