Bachelor of Science

Avondale lecturers are persuaded that Chrsistianity and science can work together. Our science courses explore the interaction between our scientific culture and Christian experience, between spiritual values and the natural world.

  • Avondale's science faculty not only offer personalised academic tuition but take genuine interest in their students' personal and spiritual growth
  • Avondale students may also obtain industry work experience before graduation. BMedSc(Pathology) students have obtained placements in Pathology labs at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, the John Hunter Hospital, the Newcastle Mater, and the Blood Bank of NSW. The Sanitariam Health Food Company's Technical Services Branch in Cooranbong has also provided ongoing work experience in its Food Microbiology and Analytical Chemistry Laboratories
  • Our degrees have a solid track record in leading their recipients to higher degree programmes, such as Masters degrees or PhDs, at other institutions

The Bachelor of Science degree is a three-year full-time or equivalent part-time degree designed to provide a tertiary science qualification in the context of Christian values. This degree will not only prepare science professionals for industry , business or postgraduate study and ongoing research, but will prepare graduates for responsible ethical leadership in our science-driven culture.

OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE BSc DEGREE

SEMINAR SUBJECTS

The offering of a major seminar/independent topic in the third year is normally subject to the student having satisfatorily completed at least 200 or 300 level subjects in the major area. Major seminars are offered subject to staff availability and at the discretion of the Dean of Faculty.

BI390 :: Seminar in Biology
CH390 :: Seminar in Chemistry
GE395 :: Independent Topic (in Human Geography)
GP395 :: Independent Topic (in Physical Geography)
MA390 :: Seminar in Mathematics

ELECTIVES

Electives may be chosen from all the areas listed for major and minor studies in the BSc as well as other degree-level subjects. Science electives can be chosen from Biological Science, Biological Chemistry, Chemistry, Food & Nutrition, Geography, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics , and other science subjects.

No more than 12 credit points of electives outside the sciences (science subjects are coded BI, CH, CO, GE, GP, MA, PH, SC) and no more than 24 credit points of electives at 100 level are allowed. Electives may be restricted if prerequisites are required for the major/minor seqeuences. The Dean of Science and Mathematics Faculty should be consulted regarding the choice of electives, particularly those outside the major/minor sequences, as not all subjects may be taken.

Students wishing to become medical laboratory scientists can complete two degrees in four years if the appropriate subject combinations are chosen. Such students can complete the BSc at Avondale over 3 years followed by the BMedSc (Pathology) at Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga Campus) in one year.
