Psychology at Avondale


Psychology may be undertaken at Avondale as part of either the Bachelor of Arts course or the Bachelor of Science course. Both the BA and BSc are three-year degrees and for students who elect to take a psychology specialisation in either of these courses, the psychology component comprises almost half of the degree. Psychology is the systematic study of the mind; that is, the determinants of our thoughts and behaviours. This extends to many areas from the biological bases through to perception, memory, personality, reasoning, how we operate within particular environmental settings and how we function as social beings.

Three years full-time or equivalent part-time

Mode of Delivery


Combination of full-time on campus for the Avondale component (Lake Macquarie Campus), and distance education plus residential school for the University of New England (UNE) component

Partnership


The psychology component of the degree is undertaken by cross-institutional enrolment at the University of New England (Armidale). While residing on the Lake Macquarie campus, students study the UNE units by distance education. In addition, students will be required to attend a three day intensive school at UNE for each unit except the two first-year units.

Accreditation


The BA and BSc degrees are accredited by the NSW Department of Education and Training.

Students may undertake a major (8 units) or minor (4 units) in psychology but students wishing to complete the APAC accredited sequence will need to complete the remainder of the units in sequence as required by the pre-requisites and by completing 100-level units prior to 200 level units and finally 300 level units.

FEE-HELP


If you are a domestic full fee-paying student, you may be eligible for FEE-HELP assistance. FEE-HELP is available for most Avondale higher education courses. FEE-HELP is a Commonwealth loan scheme that assists eligible students to defer payment of their tuition fees. FEE-HELP can cover all or part of a student’s tuition fees, up to a lifetime limit of $83,313 (2009). The $83,313 (2009) FEE-HELP limit is indexed each year. A loan fee of 20% applies to FEE-HELP loans for undergraduate courses of study. The FEE-HELP limit does not include the loan fee. No repayment is required until your income exceeds $41,595 (2008-2009 (CPI indexed).
