Practical Experience

CLINICAL PLACEMENTS

From the second semester of the first year of the BNurs course, students will participate in compulsory clinical placements each semester. The content of each clinical unit is related to the areas being studied in corresponding theoretical units. Some clinical placements are provided in cooperation with the Sydney Adventist Hospital, but there are also many other placements available in local and regional hospitals, mental health facilities, paediatric units, and at aged care and community facilities.

In order to maximise clinical learning, there is a need for students to travel off campus and make their own way to various clinical learning venues.

To participate in clinical placements, students will need to comply with the NSW Health Vaccination policy and successfully complete a Fitness to Practice Declaration.

Clinical placements go for periods of a few days to four weeks at a time, with the course requiring the completion of a total of 800 hours of placement throughout the degree.

The following units have clinical placements or service requirements as part of the requirements to pass the units:

NURS11102 Nursing Practice 2 - 80 hours

The Bachelor of Nursing course is also accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) for the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Registration and Self-Disclosure

Due to mutual recognition legislation, registration may also be granted in New Zealand. Graduates will need to apply to AHPRA via the NMBA website to register as a registered nurse prior to employment as a nurse in Australia. This process includes the assessment of good character and review of criminal history for employment in Australia and overseas. There are also English language requirements for all applicants for registration. Applicants seeking registration as a nurse in a country other than Australia should ascertain the requirements for that country.

For current registration requirements, please visit the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

The process of nurse registration in Australia includes the disclosure of a criminal record or any significant medical conditions that can affect working as an Registered Nurse.
