The Sydney Adventist Hospital Library provides a full service to the staff and students of the Avondale Faculty of Nursing and Health. The library operates as a department of the hospital supported by the Library Committee with representation from the Faculty of Nursing and Health.
The library provides the following facilities: 20 individual study carrels, a further 20 study places at tables, an AV room with video viewing facilities, a group study room, Christian Centre for Bioethics room, photocopying room with 2 copiers, and an area with easy chairs near the new books and journals display. There are 10 PCs available for public use and 7 for library staff. Access is available to the Internet on 9 public PCs.
Summary of Holdings
The library maintains a specialist nursing, medical and allied health collection of approximately 20,000 books, 1,000 videos and other audiovisuals and 400 current journal titles. The specialised Christian Centre for Bioethics houses 2,200 books and 20 current journal titles.
Hours of Opening: Full library service is given for 59 hours a week including Monday to Thursday evenings.
The borrowing of books is encouraged and loans are currently upwards of 20,000 a year. It is also possible to obtain copies of articles and books on inter-library loans.
Library Administration and Staffing
The library has a proefessionally qualified staff of four.
Users have access to CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), Medline, UNILINC, Aust Health, Cochrane Library, and Evidence Based Nursing and Medicine Reviews. The computerised catalogue includes journal articles and selective indexing, particularly of local titles. The library also provides access to 50 full-text online journals.
The library is a reciprocal member of the UNILINC network and the GRATIS hospital library network thereby providing users with access to extensive outside resources.
The library staff offers assistance in general use of the library, equipment and in information searching.
Formal library tutorials are provided for each new intake of students.
