Computer Facilities
A computing account giving access to the College network is provided free to all students. This account may be used for word processing, email, web browsing, and program development using any of the authorised languages and storage systems available.
Account details, including e-mail addresses, will be given to new students as soon as possible after registration. All student accounts will be disabled during year-end breaks and non-returning student accounts will be deleted.
The current standard for the majority of computers at College is Windows 2000, with Microsoft Office 2000. Computer facilities are available in a number of locations throughout the College including the library and all residences.
Three computer laboratories are available for general student use in the Business and Information Technology Building, and one in the White Building. These computer laboratories contain 51 IBM compatible computers. Student access to these laboratories averages 10-12 hours per day, 5.5 days per week. In addition, eighteen computers are available 24 hours per day in the residence halls.
Students have the use of eighteen computers in the Library (eleven with internet access), as well as eight catalogue-only computers with access to the UNILINC system.
There are also specialist computer laboratories in the Faculty of Art Design and Technology (for Graphic Design, CAD and CNC), the Faculty of Arts (for radio production, video production, and music composition), and the Faculty of Science and Mathematics.
In aggregate Avondale students enjoy a computer per student ratio of about 1:5.
Remote access to College computer facilities is not currently available to students. From December 2002, log-in access to the student section of the website is available to students.
