Chemistry Bridging Course (CHBR02300)

Course Description


This course has been designed to provide knowledge of introductory chemistry concepts which will enhance your class experience and final marks for the first semester subjects indicated below.

Do I need to come?


BSc and BSc/BTch degrees


If you don't have a recent pass in YR 12 Chemistry this Bridging Course is a prerequisite for the subject General Chemistry (CHEM16300), which is required for some strands within the science programs.

Bachelor of Nursing


If you don't have a recent pass in YR 12 Chemistry this Bridging Course is strongly recommended for those students who are about to commence Health Science 1 (HESC 14700). It will help you enormously if your chemistry is weak!

B Ed (Secondary)


If you do not have a recent pass in Yr 12 Chemistry this Bridging Course is strongly recommended if you plan to take the subject Food Science and Innovation (DTFN21200) within either the Technology and Applied Studies or Home Economics/Design and Technology specialisations.

Course Location


Currently it is planned that this Bridging Course be run on both the Lake Macquarie Campus and the Sydney Campus. Please ensure that your preferred venue is indicated on your online Application Form

Cost


$150 which includes all tuition materials and Course Workbook.

Meals and Accommodation (Lake Macquarie)


Off Campus Students may purchase cafeteria meal tickets from the Out of the Box cafe on Lake Macquarie Campus for $8 each or takeaway meals are available from the cafe.

On Campus Students may purchase a Meals and Accommodation package which covers your stay in the residence halls and meals commencing Tuesday (tea) 21 February to Sunday (lunch) 26 February at a charge of $200. If you are staying on as a residential student, your regular meals and accommodation package will commence 26 February (tea).

Meals and Accommodation (Sydney)


Off Campus Students are able to access the cafeteria or various cafes at the Sydney Adventist Hospital on a pay as you eat basis.

  • Ions, ionic valence, ionic bonding
  • Selected polyatomic ions
  • Writing ionic formulae and nomenclature
  • Covalent bonding, electron-dot formulae
  • Polarity, intermolecular bonding
  • Chemical equilibrium, Le Chatelier's Principle
  • Mole concept and calculations
  • Introduction to organic molecules
  • Solutions and molarity (calculations)
  • Units (SI) and unit interconversion
  • Acids and bases
  • Introduction to intermolecular bonding

Course Materials


All suppled. A Course Workbook will be given out at the first class.

Examination


There will be no examination although a pre-test and a post-test will be used to give you an idea on how well you have grasped the basic concepts. A certificate of participation will be issued to all those who have attended and completed the course.

Lake Macquarie Campus: Wednesday 22 February at 8:30 am (go to M1 (Maths/Nursing Building - opposite student carpark)
Sydney Campus: Wednesday 22 February at 9.00am (go to Faculty of Nursing and Health Reception (Rachel Cardwell's office)

What to Bring


Scientific calculator, notebook, ruler, pen, pencil

Clothing


N.B. OH&S requirements impose some restrictions on clothing worn during laboratory exercises. On these occasions students are required to wear "work" clothing (jeans permitted) and enclosed footwear (no thongs, sandals etc). Bare midriffs are not allowed.
