Scholarships at Avondale

President's Scholarship


The President's Scholarship is one of Avondale's most prestigious awards. It is awarded to a student from selected secondary schools throughout Australia and New Zealand who demonstrates a rare combination of leadership, academic excellence (likely to achieve a university ranking in the top 20% of their state, territory, or country) and service to their school and family, church and community. Value: Up to $8,000 over the duration of the course. Semester One only.


Academic Excellence Scholarship


Avondale is committed to nurturing academic achievement and each year an Academic Excellence Scholarship is awarded to all high achieving applicants from Australia and New Zealand. The Avondale Academic Excellence scholarship is worth $2,000 ($1,000 per semester) for the first year of study and $1,500 ($750 per semester) in each successive year in an undergraduate or VET course (maximum $6,500). Students must be ranked in the top 10% of the state, territory or country (i.e. receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent of 90+).
Applicants may have up to a maximum of one gap year after completing secondary school to be eligible.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship


The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship is worth $1,500 per year for residential students and $1,000 for non-residential students for each year of study of a Certificate or Diploma and up to four years of a Bachelor degree or double degree at undergraduate level.

Course Specific Scholarship


Avondale offers up to 8 Arts, 8 Business, 16 Education and 8 Science scholarships to new students from Australia and New Zealand, who have a passion for their chosen course and a desire to study at Avondale. These scholarships are worth $2,000 ($1,000 for each semester) for one year of study for students enrolled in an undergraduate degree in Arts, Business, Education and Science.

Economic Hardship Scholarship


Sums of up to $2,000 are available to Australian and New Zealand students with demonstrated financial need. The amount available is dependent upon the degree of need and the number of applicants. It is awarded as a one-off grant. Information and applications are available from the Admission Enquiry Centre or Avondale's Student Finance Office.

International Merit Scholarship


Avondale is committed to nurturing students who excel in academic achievement, music and fine arts, mission outreach, sporting achievement and student leadership. Four International Merit Scholarships are available to international students who qualify and enrol in one of Avondale's undergraduate or VET courses. The Avondale International Merit Scholarship is available for one semester or two consecutive semesters of study. It is worth up to $3,000 AUD ($1,500 per semester).

The A S & J W Jorgensen Scholarship


Through the generosity of Pastor Alfred W. Jorgensen, a former lecturer in the Faculty of Theology at Avondale, a trust fund has been established to provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships to theology students at Avondale. Applicants must be able to demonstrate eligibility on the basis of need. The number and amount of scholarships may vary from year to year depending on the funds released from the trust fund. Up to two scholarships valued at $1500 per year may be awarded.

The McDowell Theology Scholarship


Valued at up to $1500 per year, up to four first-year scholarships and up to four second, third, or fourth year scholarships are available to students from Australia or New Zealand who are enrolled in the Bachelor or the Graduate Diploma in Ministry and/or Theology program. One-off grants of up to $1500 may also be awarded. Semester One only.

Service/Leadership Scholarship (New Students)


Avondale offers up to 15 Service/Leadership Scholarships to new students from Australia and 5 to new students from New Zealand. The scholarship is worth $2,000 ($1,000 for each semester) for one year of study in any undergraduate or VET course.

Service/Leadership Scholarship (Returning Students)


Avondale offers up to 4 Service/Leadership Scholarships to returning students enrolled in an undergraduate or VET course. The scholarship is worth $2,000 ($1,000 for each semester) for one year of study in any undergraduate or VET course. Semester One only.

Summer Camp Discount


Avondale offers an unlimited number of discounts to new students who have worked at a Christian Summer camp program. The Avondale Summer Camp discount is available to Christian Camp program workers. Avondale will pay up to $150 per week of work in the form of a discount for up to three weeks.

Sydney Adventist Hospital Pathology Department and Avondale Pathology Scholarship


A limited number of scholarships worth $8,000 each ($2,000 for each of the four years of study) are available to Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathology) students entering any year of the course. Any Australian or New Zealand student entering any year of the BSc (Biomedical Science) degree at Avondale is eligible to apply. Semester One only.

Externally Funded Scholarships


ASA System Needs Education Scholarship


A limited number of scholarships worth $3,000 per annum for up to two years of study are available to teacher education students entering their third or fourth year of an undergraduate teacher education degree course, or the first or second year of a graduate-entry Bachelor of Teaching degree course at Avondale College of Higher Education. Each year scholarships are made available in specific teaching fields where ASA perceives that there is a high demand. For 2012 scholarships will be offered to male primary undergraduates and secondary undergraduates with specialisation in English, Bible, Mathematics and Science. Successful applicants will also receive an additional $3,000 payable during the first year of employment as a graduate teacher with Adventist Schools Australia, bringing the scholarship total to a maximum amount of $9,000. Emphasis in allocation of scholarships will be given to students undertaking teaching majors in short supply.

ASA Regional Education Scholarship


A limited number of regional education scholarships worth $5,000 per annum for three years (a total of $15,000 per scholarship) are available to teacher education students entering their third or fourth year of an undergraduate teacher education degree course, or the first or second year of a graduate-entry Bachelor of Teaching degree course at Avondale College of Higher Education. The ASA Regional Education Scholarship is a three-year scholarship; hence if commencing a scholarship in the third year of study or the first year of a BTch study program, the scholarship will continue until the end of the first year of an appointment in an Australian Adventist School. Scholarships commencing in the fourth or final year of an Avondale College of Higher Education teaching degree are extended into the second year of teaching in an Australian Adventist school. Emphasis in allocation of regional scholarships will be given to students willing to teach in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Mildura (Victoria), Bundaberg (Queensland) and Northern Queensland.

Commonwealth Scholarship - Indigenous Access Scholarships


The Indigenous Access Scholarship Scheme is an Australian Federal Government initiative that aims to provide assistance to Indigenous Australians who would like to access higher education, particularly those who need to relocate from rural and remote areas to access an approved higher education undergraduate or enabling course. These scholarships are only available to those students who have been invited to apply.


General Conference - Women's Ministry Scholarship


Scholarship awards are based on academic achievement, financial need, and community outreach. Specific amounts of scholarship awards vary from year to year and are dependent on the funds available in your division. Scholarships may be obtained only through your home division.

King & Amy O'Malley Trust Scholarships


King & Amy O'Malley Trust awards annual undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for students applying for or enrolled in tertiary Home Economics or equivalent programs, such as Consumer Science, Family and Consumer Studies. Scholarships are worth $5000 for undergraduate students and $7500 for full time postgraduate students (also available as part time scholarships). Full details about the scholarships can be found on the Trust website www.omalleytrust.com.au and applications close 5.00pm on the last Friday in July each year.


NZPUC Education Scholarship and Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) Assistance Grant


The New Zealand Pacific Union Conference (NZPUC) wishes to encourage students preparing for the Teaching Ministry. A tangible way of doing this is to provide financial assistance to students studying Teacher Education at Avondale College of Higher Education (Australia). The purpose of these scholarships is to enhance the supply of Seventh-day Adventist teachers in New Zealand. The NZPUC has two forms of assistance available for students studying for a teaching qualification at Avondale College. There is a Commonwealth Supported Place Assistance Grant of AU$1000 and an Education Scholarship of AU$3000.

NZPUC New Zealand Students Scholarship


The New Zealand Pacific Union conference would like to assist in making an Avondale education more viable for New Zealand students and to increase the supply of denominationally trained workers for the church in New Zealand.
