Search hints

In the Advanced Search screen, click on Help for tips on searching and making the most of your library account.

  • To search for an exact phrase (and not individual words in the phrase) enclose the phrase in quotation marks e.g. "global warming"

  • Use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) for a more fruitful search e.g. 'Irish OR celtic' will give results with either word, 'Irish AND celtic' will give only results with both words, and 'Irish NOT celtic' will give only results with only the specified word.

  • The ? character may be placed within or at the end of a word to perform a single character wildcard search. For example, type wom?n to search for records that contain the strings woman or women.

  • The * character may be placed within or at the end of a word to perform a multiple character wildcard search. For example, type cultur* to search for records that contain strings, such as culture, cultural, and culturally.

  • You can use parentheses to group terms within a query. For example, to search for Shakespeare and either tragedy or sonnet, type 'shakespeare (tragedy OR sonnet)
