Worship institute launches second music book

09 November 2006

An Avondale College lecturer and church member have produced a second music book to encourage new pianists to join praise and worship bands.

Dr Lyell Heise and Valmai Hill's Play today 2 contains, like the first book, 12 worship songs with arrangements for beginners and intermediates. Each song in the book comes with a note about the song's origins, a Bible reference and a note to piano teachers about how to use each song in their lessons.

Pastor Heise coordinated the production of the book in his role as director of the college-based Institute of Worship. Mrs Hill, a piano teacher and former director of music at College Church, arranged each of the songs.

Sales of Play today 2, which the institute launched in September, have already reached 500. One Seventh-day Adventist church in Queensland bought 12 copies, one for each pianist in the church.

Play today sold about 1500 copies, largely because, according to Dr Heise, you could not find in the Christian market music books that included contemporary pieces for beginners or that combined beginners pieces with intermediate pieces. "Lots of kids, teenagers and parents are overjoyed they can play songs they sing at school and church," says Dr Heise.

Play today 3 is due to come out in early next year.

Play today 2 is available from the Avondale College bookshop and from Adventist Book Centres for $19.95.
