Jonnday's success brings end to summer fling

24 October 2007

The Summer Fling is over for three Avondale College students after winning two music competitions with their band this year.

Kara Jones (guitar, vocals), Jessamy Purcell (guitar, vocals) and Jordan Smith (drums) entered Phenomena 07, organised in association with a youth conference at Christian City Church Oxford Falls in April. The three, plus Jono Adams (bass) and Anna Williams (vocals), won the competition in front of 2500 people, and The Summer Fling became Jonnday.

The indie-art band continued playing and song writing. It also entered and won another competition, Sea FM's Battle of the Bands in August. The spoils included two days in a recording studio, 500 CDs and radio play on the station. "Jonnday has become more than just a hobby," says Kara.

It is also more than just a name, which Jono created after sarcastically suggesting the band needed an eighth day of the week because each member found it difficult to find time to practice. "When you break 'Jonnday' down, it loosely means God-given day," says Kara.

All five members of Jonnday worship at Liberty Family Church in Gosford--Kara, a final-year arts and teaching student, is the worship director; Jess, a second-year primary education student, is the youth worship director. "We'd rather be seen a Christians who happen to be musicians rather than musicians who happen to be Christians," says Kara.--with Bev Christian
