LECTURER'S DOUBLE BILLING AT EDUCATION CONFERENCE
Avondale College senior education lecturer Dr Cedric Greive has presented two papers at the Fifth International Conference of Science and Technology Education in Perth. His papers were entitled, "An example of the use of surprise as a vehicle for learning," and "Air-flow phenomena and Bernoulli's equation." Greive presented the first paper with senior chemistry lecturer Dr Kevin de Berg. He also spent two days as a visiting scholar in the Science and Mathematics Education Centre at Curtin University of Technology.

FOUNDATION FUNDING FOR STAFF MEMBERS
Staff members successfully applying for funding from the Avondale Foundation, which has again granted $55,000 for research, include Greive and Drs Rob McIver, Jason Morton, Daniel Reynaud, Ray Roennfeldt and Graham Stacey.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE FOCUS OF VP'S NEW BOOK
Vice-president (administration and research) Dr Vivienne Watts has co-authored a book that examines the problems of classroom discipline and suggests more efficient management techniques. Classroom Discipline and Management: Second Australasian Edition, due to be published in April this year, aims to help teachers explore various approaches to classroom discipline along with their personal philosophy. The text emphasises informed decision-making by clarifying the assumptions behind a disciplinary approach, as well as the theory and practical applications of that approach.

AVONDALE'S AUQA AUDITOR
Watts has also accepted an appointed as an auditor for the Australian Universities Quality Agency.
