Avondale educator honoured as fellow

06 July 2009

Avondale College vice-president (learning and teaching) Dr Philip Brown has been awarded a Fellowship of the Australian College of Educators (ACE).

ACE presents the award to educators whom their peers judge to have made a distinctive contribution to education in Australia. "It's humbling," says Philip. "I continue to be passionate about initiatives that can maximise student learning, enhance teacher effectiveness and progress the recognition and professional development of educators across all sectors of Australian education."

The president of ACE in New South Wales, Dr John DeCourcy, says the award is one of the highest honours the college presents. It "[recognises] the individual's contribution both in the workplace and in the education community," he says.

Philip's contribution includes innovative leadership in establishing teaching as a profession through roles as author, consultant, teacher and president of a professional association-he serves as president of ACE's The Hills/Parramatta region in Sydney.

Cheryl O'Conner, the former chief executive officer of ACE, says Philip's educational leadership role is characterised by "great thinking, great attention to the people factor and great attention to detail."

Thirty-nine staff members (up from six this past year) and 79 students from Avondale are now members of ACE.
