Musical to premiere at Avondale after 30 years
01 March 2010
A musical about the Bible character David will premiere in Australia at Avondale this year almost three decades after a college lecturer helped write it.
Son of Jesse brings to life the story of a man after God's own heart, says one of the co-authors, Associate Professor Daniel Reynaud, the dean of the Faculty of Arts. "It's a powerful way of presenting the life of one of the Bible's great heroes."
Daniel wrote the choir-based musical with colleague and friend Adrian Bell in 1981 and revised it in 1983. Staff members and students from Longburn Adventist College performed it in New Zealand both years. A new version will make its Australian premiere at the Avondale College Alumni Association's annual Homecoming on August 28.
Dr Robb Dennis, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Arts, will produce Son of Jesse and direct the music. Avondale alumna Kristin Thiele will direct the drama.
