Avondale rejoices at open cut backdown

22 May 2006

"The decision is a good one, both for the human and natural environment," writes Dr Cox in a reply to Centennial's project manager Garry Collins. "It shows [your] willingness to listen to the concerns of the local community, and it will ensure staff members and students at Avondale College continue to enjoy the advantages of working and studying in a peaceful, healthy and scenic environment.

"We thank you for the part you have played in making this decision." Mr Collins wrote to Dr Cox to thank him for participating in the consultative process and the environmental assessment. Dr Cox had also written to six state Members of Parliament opposing the proposal.

"This is an occasion for real rejoicing," Dr Cox told staff members during their meeting on Monday. He then invited College Church senior minister Dr Bruce Manners and associate vice president (academic) Harwood Lockton to pray.

"We come in thanksgiving," said Dr Manners. "This is a good decision for the college and the community. Thank you for the people involved in fighting for the decision."
Mr Lockton called the open-cut the most recent threat to Avondale and said it would have "diminished the attractiveness and beauty of the estate."

Centennial Coal will now submit a separate application to extend its underground mine at Newstan.
