Research: | Gemma uses computational chemistry to study metals as catalysts. She has a particular interest in how metals and their environment can be tuned to control reactivity both in synthetic compounds and in enzymes. Gemma is currently studying oxygen activation by iron-containing enzymes and iron containing complexes designed to mimic these enzymes. | |
About: | Gemma completed her PhD in computational chemistry at the Australian National University (ANU) under Prof. Rob Stranger, on the topic of nitrogen activation. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Feliu Maseras at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalunya, Tarragona, Spain (2007-9). She then won a Humboldt Fellowship at the University of Bonn, Germany (2009-11) under Prof. Frank Neese. She currently lectures in chemistry at Avondale and continues her research on non-heme iron enzymes. Gemma is interested in music and languages. She and her husband share a love of travel, and photography. |
