Welcome to Winter School

We can’t wait to see you on campus for Winter School. You will find all the information you need here. More information will be added as it becomes available, so please bookmark this page.

Winter School is a great opportunity to meet other students, your lecturers and study on our beautiful Lake Macquarie campus. To ensure you achieve the best Winter School experience please:
Register your intention: If you haven't already, click the registration link in your Winter School invitation email, so we can prepare appropriately for your time with us.
Read all Winter School info: Read through this page to ensure you have all the relevant information to set yourself up for a successful Winter School experience.
Pack for the weather: If you are staying on campus, please remember to pack warm clothes. It can be cold in July – especially at night!

Study Essentials

Student ID Cards

These are important for a positive Winter School experience so please ensure that you have one at Winter School. If you don’t have a student ID card or need a new ID card, request one here. Choose to pick up your card from the Reception when you arrive to avoid delays in the mail.

Library open hours during Winter School are:

Library Orientation

Come along to a morning tea in the library on Monday 8 July 2024 from 10:00am -10:45am for some light refreshments and a brief orientation of library services available to you. Other morning and afternoon teas will be provided by the individual Faculties. Information and directions will be provided on your first day.

First day of classes

On the first day of classes, you will go directly to the assigned room on your timetable. If you do not know your way around campus, head to Reception (in the Dorothy Cottier Building, K10 on map) for assistance.

Meals on Campus

(NB Students staying on campus should refer to the Staying on Campus section for further information about meals)

Meals are available from 7@Avondale, which offers a healthy range of vegan and vegetarian options. Dining options include a buffet-style dining room and a café menu with hot and cold beverages, freshly cooked pizzas, and other items. Please note where buffet options are not available additional hot meal options will be available from the Café’.

Cafeteria Hours:
| Weekday Lunch: 11:30am – 2:00pm
| Saturday Lunch: 12:00pm – 2:00pm
| Sunday Brunch: 9:00am – 12:00pm
| Dinner (all week): 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Day students will pay up front for any meals purchased. Sponsored day students should keep receipts to claim directly from their employer/sponsoring body at the conclusion of Winter School.

In the case of an emergency, please contact Security on 02 4980 2333. It is strongly encouraged that you add this number to your phone contacts – at least while you are on campus.

For any issues or questions including lost access cards/keys and trouble accessing venues on campus during business hours, please contact Reception on 02 4980 2222. If you have these issues outside of business hours, please contact Security. Please always keep your lanyard with your student ID card on your person (i.e. around your neck) to avoid being locked out of rooms etc. and more importantly to avoid call out fees outside of Reception business hours.

Staying on Campus

Student ID Cards

Your Student ID Card is an important asset while you are on campus, so please be sure to bring this with you when you come. If you do not already have a Student ID Card, please apply for one as soon as possible so that it can be ready at Reception when you arrive. To apply for a card request one here.

Arrival

Where possible please plan to arrive on campus at a time when reception is open. See below opening hours. Please come to Reception (Dorothy Cottier Building - K10 on map) upon arrival to:

• Have your room access added to your Student ID card, either bought with you or pre-arranged as mentioned above,
• Pick up your hoodie and t-shirt (if ordered) or purchase other Avondale University merchandise. Merchandise is available everyday while reception is open.


Reception Open Hours:
Monday to Thursday 8:30am – 5:00pm
Friday 8:30am – 12:00pm
Sunday (7 July only) 10:00am – 4:00pm


Arrival outside of normal hours
If you will be arriving outside the hours listed above, you will need to make prior arrangements to access your accommodation. Please ensure that you provide specific details about your on-campus arrival times to [email protected]. In some cases, you may need to plan alternative accommodation for your arrival night.

Airport Arrivals
Sydney - We do not provide transfers from Sydney Airport. Please factor into your travel sufficient time to get through customs (if an international flight) and a 2.5-hour train commute to the University. (See Train to Morisset information below).

Newcastle - We may be able to provide transfers from Newcastle airport depending on the time of your arrival. Please provide specific details about your arrival to [email protected] and we will be in touch to discuss options and assist where we can.

Train to Morisset
From Sydney Airport, take a suburban train to Central Station. This is only a few stops and takes approx. 10-15 minutes. Get off the airport train at Central Station and change platforms. You will need to locate the Sydney to Newcastle Intercity Line (usually from Platform 9). The trip from Central Station to Morisset Station is approximately 2 hours so factor this into your travel time. Get off at Morisset Station.

Transfers from Morisset Station to Avondale University
There is no regular bus service between the Morisset Station and the University campus. If you are planning to arrive in Morisset by train you will need to arrange to be picked up in Morisset. If you need to transport from Morisset station to the University, please contact the Accommodation team at least 7 days prior to make arrangements. The accommodation team can be contacted via email [email protected] or phone (02 4980 2222) to discuss options with you for your arrival and departure.

Accommodation and Meals

Winter School students have the option to stay in dormitory-style accommodation on campus, priced at $58 per night* ($40.60 per person for twin sharing) with a compulsory minimum daily meal credit. Meal options can be tailored based on individual preferences or sponsorships.

* Inclusions: Linen and bedding, pillow, towel. Linen changed weekly.

• Log in with your Avondale account
• Click on "Apply for Accommodation"
• Choose "Lake Macquarie Residential Halls" for the "2024 Winter Residential School Period"
• Follow the prompts to complete your booking.


Meals / Meal Credit Options
Meals are available from 7@Avondale, which offers a healthy range of plant based and vegetarian options. Dining options include a buffet-style dining room and a café menu with hot and cold beverages, freshly cooked pizzas, and other items. Please note where buffet options are not available additional hot meal options will be available from the Café’.

Students with an accommodation and meal credit package or sponsored day students (arranged with [email protected] prior to arrival) can use their student ID card, which has the meal credit applied, to purchase meals at 7@Avondale.

Daily Meal Credit Options:
| $17: Equivalent to one buffet meal (Lunch or Dinner) or to spend on items from the café
| $34: Equivalent to two buffet meals (Lunch and Dinner) or to spend on items from the café
| $55: Includes a continental breakfast and two buffet meals, or to spend on items from the café

Important Notes:
| Present your student ID to receive student rates and purchases with your meal credit.
| Please remember to monitor your meal credit balance throughout your stay to ensure it covers your meals. You can check your balance when making purchases.
| 7@Avondale operates using EFTPOS only, there is no cash facilities.

On Campus Facilities

Avondale University Church
Open every Saturday morning for Sabbath School and Church. Winter School students and visitors are most welcome to join the church community for Sabbath services as follows:
Sabbath School: 9:30am
Main Service: 11:00am

Auditorium
The Auditorium will not be available during Winter School, as the floors have been affected by water damage and will be under repair during the Semester break. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Squash & Tennis Courts
The Squash and Tennis Courts will be available during your Winter School stay. More information on dates and times of opening will be available here soon.

Pickleball
Pickleball is available every Sunday (9:30am-12:30pm), and Tuesday and Thursday (5:00pm-7:00pm) in the Education Hall while the Audo is being repaired.

Gym
The on-campus gym, Fit Life Health Club, will be open during your stay and available for use on a ‘pay as you go’ basis. You will find this on the floor below 7@Avondale accessed via the road between Ella Boyd Hall and 7@Avondale.

Lower College Hall
Lower College Hall is a common place to hang out with friends. This space will be open during the day from 8:00am to around 10:30pm. A projector is set up permanently to enable students to watch a movie through their laptop. Pool and table tennis tables are also available.

Other facilities in the local area

A café, takeaway, IGA grocery store, post office and chemist are available in the Avondale Shopping Village just a short walk away from the campus at the intersection of Avondale University Drive and Freemans Drive.

Better Books and Foods (previously Adventist Book Centre) is located next to Avondale Memorial Church and across the road from the Avondale Shopping Village.

The Cooranbong Community Centre Op Shop is located at 614 Freemans Drive, Cooranbong, approximately 1 km from the University, and is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00am – 1:30pm.

Sponsored Students

If your attendance at Winter School is sponsored by your employer, your accommodation and/or meal costs may be covered by your employer. This will be reflected in your account once you confirm attendance. Sponsored students, who want accommodation in the residence halls on campus must complete an application at the Accommodation ResLife portal as mentioned under accommodation. Please discuss what is included with your sponsor is you are uncertain what is included.

• If uncertain about your sponsorship coverage, coordinate with your sponsor beforehand to determine what they will cover. Expenses not covered by your sponsor will be a personal expense.

• Accommodation and meal expenses for residential students will be billed directly to your employer/sponsoring entity.

• Day students will pay up front for any meals purchased but keep receipts to claim directly from their employer/sponsoring body at the conclusion of Winter School.

• If your sponsorship includes an outfitting allowance or stipend, reach out to your sponsor and email [email protected] before arrival to ensure availability of funds upon arrival.

Amenities

There are washing machines available in the residential halls and free for student use. Dryers are available in some halls but are coin operated. Washing detergent will be provided. Limited shared kitchen facilities are available in the residential halls.

Kit yourself out with a warm Avondale Hoodie and t-shirt for only $50, normally $75 for both! Enter your WINTERSCHOOL25 code at the checkout on the online store to receive discount. Purchase online prior to your arrival, choose the 'pick up' option so that we can have them ready for you when you arrive on campus, OR you can order and pay at Reception when you arrive - pending supplies.
