General

Generally, we use the Dewey system which consists of numbers followed by the author's surname initial and an identification number.

Biographical Works

Biographical works generally follow the same format but use two author initials. The first is for the person under discussion. The second is for the person writing the biography.

Literary Authors

For literary author's works, a running number from 1 to 199 is used; for critical works a running number from 200 is applied, as shown in the examples below:

Works by E. G. White

Works by Mrs E. G. White have call numbers W followed by a 2-figure abbreviation
e.g. W Se4 is for Selected Messages
There are a few variations on this. Critical works about Mrs White are entered at 286.73092.

Australian Bureau of Statistics

Publications from the Australian Bureau of Statistics are given a call number ABS followed by their respective code.

Avondale University theses are found in Special Collections and all other theses are in the Main Collection and can be search for on Primo Search.

Special Collections

For collections other than the Main Collection, a prefix is added, followed by a space and then the call number. The following prefixes are used:

Library Call Number System

Generally we use the Dewey number, followed by 3 capital letters (usually first 3 letters of author's surname, or of title) then edition statement eg. 610.73072 POL 7E

Journals

Journals (also called periodicals or serials) do not have a Dewey number and are listed in the catalogue as JOURNALS. On the shelves, they are filed alphabetically by title.

Tom Ludowici Bioethics Collection

The classification we use in this collection is the National Reference Centre for Bioethics Literature Library Classification Scheme which was created by Georgetown University specifically for bioethics. The decimal numbers range from 1 to 22. The first 4 letters of the author are capitalised followed by the year of publication eg. 2.1/SCUL/2010 . Reference books in this collection have the prefix B-REF. Bioethics periodicals are listed in the catalogue as BIOETHICS PERIODICAL and do not have a Dewey number. On the shelves, they are filed alphabetically by title.

Works by E.G. White

Works by Ellen G. White have call numbers W followed by 2 capital letters which are the initials of the first 2 important words of the title eg. W AA Acts of the apostles

Special Collections

For collections other than the Main Collection, a prefix is added, followed by a space (or hyphen in bioethics) and then the call number.
