Avondale University recently attended the General Conference (GC) Session of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in St Louis, Missouri. This quinquennial event offers a connection to the global functions and leadership of the Church organisation but also into the promising future of Avondale University. Amid procedural motions and cultural nuance, a clear takeaway emerged: there is growing optimism about the leadership, identity, and global relevance of Avondale University.

A major development came with the election of Pastor Elden Köhler as the new General Conference President, succeeding Elder Ted Wilson. Köhler quickly made an impression as a leader who values community, listens deeply, and fosters Gospel-centered unity across diverse cultures. Members of the South Pacific Division delegation voted to re-appoint the senior officers, Pr Glenn Townend (President), Pr Mike Sikuri (General Secretary), Mr Francois Keet (CFO), and to appoint Pr Maveni Kaufononga to the newly established position of SPD Vice-President and Mr David Potter to the newly established position of SPD Associate Secretary.

The appointment of Pastor Kaufononga adds further strength and cultural insight to the South Pacific leadership team. His practical wisdom and long-standing working relationships from the Pacific are already proving to be valuable assets to Avondale University.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Malcolm Coulson reflects on his experience attending the GC Session as “I came away with a sense of optimism that we have in this new leadership team – really positive, Godly, and gospel driven – that's going to come from our world church.”

For Avondale University, the outcomes of this session signal strong support from leadership, both in the South Pacific, and globally. This stability is expected to have a positive impact on Avondale University’s next chapter. Having already worked through the university’s strategy and role within the church, these organisational leaders understand both the value and the challenges of operating a tertiary institution within a faith-based context. They are well-positioned to advocate for Avondale University’s continued development and influence.
