Avondale University is saddened to announce the passing of Dr Bryan Ball.
Dr Ball was President of Avondale from 1984 to 1990, then became President of the South Pacific Division from 1990 to 1997. He was instrumental in the furthered development of the Sydney Adventist Hospital and helping Pacific Adventist University achieve their university status.
Born in London, Dr Ball received his bachelor’s from Newbold College, his Master of Arts in Religion from Andrews University, and was awarded his PhD from London University. Dr Ball began his career as a ministerial intern at New Gallery – a Crown-estate owned building in Regent Street in London, and a Seventh-Day Adventist Church from 1953 to 1992. There he met his wife, Dawn, and the pair married in 1959. They share three children, Corinne, Martin, and Jacqui.
Dr Ball had a vast experience in the Adventist church throughout the globe, working within the North and South England conferences. In 1971 he was elected President of the North England conference, then transitioned to chairman of the Theology department at Newbold College in 1976. He became President of Avondale in 1984. Stepping into his role as SPD President, Dr Ball was concerned about the growth of the church, and finding sustainable ways to support it, both within the islands and home unions.
Ball is a published author and is a widely cited scholar, who’s academic work spans both historical and current theological matters. One of his notable works is The English Connection: The Puritan Roots of Seventh-Day Adventist Belief.
Dr Ball passed away on November 12, 2025. He was 90. He leaves a legacy of leadership and serving his world for good.
A memorial service will be held at Avondale University Church, on November 28, 2025, at 11am.
