Avondale University and Excelsia University College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on jointly conferred academic awards and shared learning experiences, marking a significant step forward in Christian higher education in Australia.

The agreement establishes a framework for both institutions to explore shared program delivery, recruitment, and academic pathways, with the goal of enhancing opportunities for students and advancing a shared mission of service through education. The MOU outlines joint governance through a Joint Executive Steering Group and a Joint Academic Steering Committee to oversee course delivery, quality assurance, and academic excellence.

Both Avondale and Excelsia are known for their commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences, evidenced by consistently high QILT ratings for teaching quality, learner support, and engagement. Graduates of both universities are highly sought after, recognised for their values-driven approach and focus on service to the community.

Avondale University Vice-Chancellor Professor Malcolm Coulson said the collaboration aligns with Avondale’s mission to expand Christian education and strengthen cooperation in the sector.

‘We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with an institution with a similar mission outlook and a strong Christian worldview. We will enter into discussions over the course of the coming year for the shared delivery of courses that are mission-aligned and provide mutual benefit.’

Avondale University Chancellor Pr Glenn Townend described the initiative as an exciting milestone.

"Partnerships with other Christian Higher Education Institutions in Australia will bring benefits to Avondale University and will enable Avondale to broaden it’s mission and influence. The partnership with Excelsia is an exciting opportunity to broaden Christian and Adventist education philosophy with others."

Excelsia University College leaders echoed the shared sense of purpose and opportunity.

"This MoU marks the shared aspirations of Avondale University and Excelsia University College as two mission-aligned institutions purposefully advancing Christian mission, knowledge and service. We are proud of this alliance. We look towards a future of shared achievements and the fostering of Christian character," said Mr Phillip Cave AM, Chairman of the Board, Excelsia University College.

"This MoU is a testament to a combined vision of the future. We celebrate the new possibilities the JCA brings to enable us to achieve scale through partnership by consolidating our strength and resources to, together, drive excellence, increase our reach and leverage new opportunities open to both partners across both institutional networks. Excelsia sees no better partner in its aspirations to learn and develop and to share its own achievements with," said Mr Peter McKeon, CEO, Excelsia University College.

"This MoU is especially rewarding for me, given my affiliation with both Avondale and Excelsia. I believe in the enormous value of this bond between our two institutions grounded in faith and committed to the mission of higher education. Our shared priority is to serve our students with distinction. Together we can be agile to future-proof education for the common good," said Professor Jane Fernandez, Provost, Excelsia University College.

Excelsia’s values—Christ-likeness, innovation and creativity, scholarship, service to the community, and lifelong learning—are closely aligned with Avondale’s vision for transformative Christian higher education. Together, the institutions will continue to explore new ways to collaborate, innovate, and extend the reach of faith-based education in Australia and beyond.
