Avondale University’s next generation of artists stepped confidently into the public eye on Wednesday, 12 November, unveiling an impressive collection of work at the Flying Spanners Gallery in Teralba, NSW. The exhibition marked a milestone moment for Visual Arts students within the School of Arts and Business, who presented a diverse and highly polished body of work developed over the semester.

Guided by lecturer and practising artist Dr Richard Morris, the exhibition showcased the creative voices of students Imae Farquharson, Ella Bennetts, Tim Gyles, and Nikita Jensen. Their works spanned a broad range of media, from ceramics and oil landscapes to figurative ink pieces and contemporary sculpture. Together, the students presented highlights from their semester-long explorations across both 2D and 3D practices, including assemblage, ceramics, painting, and drawing.

Exhibiting in a professional gallery setting is a key developmental opportunity for emerging artists, and this event offered students an authentic experience in preparing, curating, and discussing their work with a wider audience. Beyond technical skill, the evening provided an important platform for building confidence, industry connections, and community engagement.

The event also celebrated a standout achievement: Ella Bennetts was announced as the recipient of the School of Arts and Business Acquisition Prize, an honour awarded for exceptional creative accomplishment. As part of the prize, one of Bennetts’ artworks has been purchased for the Avondale University Collection, where it will remain on public display—an enduring recognition of her artistic talent and a meaningful milestone in her emerging career.

Dr Morris commended the students’ commitment and artistic growth throughout the semester. “The works reflect both technical as well as conceptual developments each student has achieved over this time, as evidenced in both the works themselves, and the Visual Diaries that accompany them,” he said.

The gallery opening drew an enthusiastic crowd of staff, students, alumni, and members of the local arts community, all gathering to celebrate the creative achievements of Avondale’s rising artists. The exhibition stands as a testament to the university’s dedication to cultivating artistic excellence and supporting meaningful pathways for students’ future creative careers.
