Vice-Chancellor Malcolm Coulson’s message to staff, students and community:

Our community has been deeply saddened by the tragic attack at Bondi Beach over the weekend, in which members of the Jewish faith were targeted while gathering to celebrate their culture. What should have been a moment of joy and connection was instead marked by violence and loss.

In response to these events, flags are flying at half-mast as a sign of respect and remembrance for the lives lost. As a community, we grieve alongside the families, friends, loved ones of those affected and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

We stand firmly in support of the right of all faith communities to worship, gather, and celebrate their culture in safety and security. There is no place for violence in our community and we remain committed to responding with compassion, respect, and unity.

In moments of grief and uncertainty, the importance of caring for one another becomes especially clear. Community members are encouraged to take time in the coming days to check in with those around them, whether through shared prayer, quiet reflection, or a simple and compassionate conversation. Support is available, and anyone in need is encouraged to reach out.

The NSW Government is preparing an online condolence book for those who wish to share messages of sympathy and support with individuals and families impacted by the Bondi Beach attack.

We remember and honour those who have lost their lives, holding them and their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.
