Avondale University has launched the first edition of Vignette - a new annual creative writing journal that showcases the diverse range of voices of alumni, staff, students and guest contributors. The publication is a collection of poetry, short fiction, memoir, non-fiction opinion pieces, and book reviews that highlight the creative and vibrant culture of the Avondale community. The publication is edited by Creative Arts lecturer Lynnette Lounsbury and Communications officer Bailee McLeod.
“We wanted Vignette to be a platform for creative expression and connection,” said Vignette’s editorial team. “The stories within these pages capture the imagination, heart, and depth of our community, each piece a small vignette of the human experience.”
The journal launched on Saturday October 25 at the Tell Me a Story event held on the Lake Macquarie campus. Established over a decade ago by artist and visual arts lecturer Jo Darby, the event made a return from its hiatus to celebrate live storytelling and performance.
Hosted by Jo Darby and Lynnette Lounsbury, the night brought an array of performances from speakers including Dr Warrick Long, Althea Halliday, Kimberly Brown, David Riley, Paul Tenorio, and Jim Lounsbury. The evening featured a rich tapestry of voices, as well as live renditions of personal experiences, fairy tales, historical accounts, and poetry, interwoven with live music. With more than 100 people in attendance, the space was filled with laughter and reflection, making it a fitting space for the journal’s launch.
Avondale plans to make Vignette and Tell Me a Story annual traditions, filling a need in the community to celebrate storytelling and the university’s creative and cultural life.
