As we look toward 2026, Gartner’s latest research shows how Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs) are rethinking their priorities for the next phase of work. The focus is shifting from traditional HR operations to a more strategic agenda that brings together technology, people and culture to strengthen organisational resilience (You can download and read the full Gartner summary here.)

Gartner identifies four key priorities shaping the future of HR and leadership:

  1. Harness AI to revolutionize HR. Artificial intelligence is moving beyond efficiency and automation to become a true strategic partner. HR leaders who redesign their operating models around AI are realising stronger collaboration, improved decision-making and enhanced employee experience. The task now is to ensure these gains align with organisational values and keep people at the heart of transformation.
  2. Shape work in the human–machine era. As AI changes how work is done, CHROs must help design a blended workforce where people and technology complement one another. Gartner encourages leaders to move past seeing AI as a bolt-on tool and instead embed it into how teams create value and impact.
  3. Mobilise leaders for growth in an uncertain world. With volatility a constant, the ability to lead through change is now a defining leadership skill. The most effective leaders won’t just communicate change, but will build it into the rhythm of daily work, helping teams develop confidence and adaptability.
  4. Address culture atrophy to power performance. Sustaining a strong, values-based culture remains critical. Gartner’s research shows that when culture is embedded into everyday behaviours and systems, employee performance can rise by more than 30%.

For CHROs and senior leaders alike, these insights provide a roadmap for leading through disruption. They highlight the importance of combining technological capability with human discernment, and of ensuring that innovation strengthens both performance and purpose in equal measure.
