A retrospective exhibition by Daniel Atkins

Observing some of the 2000 species of birds native to Uganda during his visit to the country in 2007 provided some of the inspiration for Avondale College alumnus Daniel Atkins’s retrospective exhibition Birds.

Daniel, a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Teaching graduate of 2003, taught science to secondary school students in the Ruwenzori Mountains at the time. “I gained a more thorough appreciation of the agility of birds to navigate their environment with precision and skill,” he says.

Birds features acrylic on canvas, graphite on paper and watercolour on arches. It includes works from Daniel’s research into natural history illustration, which he is completing for his PhD through The University of Newcastle. The objective: to develop a methodology and approach to illustrating birds and fish in a moment of motion.

Birds is on exhibition in the Joanne Felk Gallery until Thursday, November 11.
