In a significant step forward for research at Avondale University, the Australian Research Council (ARC) made its first official outreach visit to our Lake Macquarie campus on Thursday, 29 May. The visit by Professor Steven Weller, ARC Executive Director for Engineering, Information and Computing Sciences, marked a milestone moment in Avondale’s growing research engagement and visibility on the national stage.
Hosted by the Research Services team, Professor Weller delivered a well-attended presentation—available both in person and online—offering an overview of the ARC’s mission and the funding opportunities available through its National Competitive Grants Program. His insights clarified how universities like Avondale can better access research funding and outlined the various grant schemes offered to support projects of national significance.
A key message from Professor Weller was the importance of collaboration—particularly for smaller universities. He encouraged Avondale’s researchers to build strong partnerships and networks, especially with other universities, to enhance their competitiveness for ARC grants. This aligns well with Avondale’s current strategic focus on increasing research collaboration, both nationally and internationally, including in the South Pacific.
Professor Weller met with researchers from Avondale’s three Research Centres: the Christian Education Research Centre, the Lifestyle Medicine and Health Research Centre, and the Scripture, Spirituality and Society Research Centre - offering tailored advice and strategic insights into how each centre can refine their approach to funding applications and maximise their research impact.
The visit served as recognition of the valuable and growing contribution Avondale researchers are making across a range of disciplines. Our faith-inspired, evidence-based, and impact-driven research is gaining traction, not only within the Seventh-day Adventist higher education sector, but also in the broader academic community.
This engagement with the ARC comes at an opportune time as Avondale continues to develop research capabilities and grow partnerships both locally and internationally. It also underscores the role of research in shaping the future of Christian education, health, and society.
