The Bachelor of Business prepares students for a professional career in a business environment. With major areas of study offered in accounting, human resource management, marketing and business administration, students will graduate with a broad, real-world skill set.

Our lecturers have an extensive understanding of business environments, providing a dynamic learning environment for students to be creative and innovative in problem solving. With small class sizes, students will benefit from personalised support in their studies.

Students are strongly encouraged to undertake an internship as a part of their course. This requires a minimum of 120 hours in a professional environment related to their area of study, preparing students to step into their careers with confidence.

Course Details

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Business, graduates will be able to:
  • demonstrate a broad theoretical knowledge of business studies and the business environment;
  • apply skills of analysis, synthesis, evaluation and research to the business environment;
  • exhibit skills of problem recognition and problem-solving;
  • demonstrate efficient and effective decision-making skills in business;
  • apply the ability to work cooperatively in a team as well as to show individual initiative;
  • communicate ideas orally, in written form and through information technologies;
  • develop a capacity for both independent and cooperative engagement with new thought, facilitating lifelong learning;
  • Construct an integrated personal philosophy of business, informed by both a thoroughly Christian worldview and an awareness of ethical, cultural and gender diversity;
  • employ a high professional ethic, evidenced by acceptance of the responsibilities inherent within the practice of business as outlined by professional societies, and of the wider responsibilities to society;
  • exhibit an appreciation of the balance between personal and corporate rights and obligations;
  • apply a greater knowledge of a specific field within the business studies discipline.

There are many options for satisfying the entry requirements for our courses. An applicant needs to meet at least one of the following entry requirements to be given an offer to study at Avondale.

I have completed my secondary education in Australia or New Zealand and achieved:

*Applicants must not be a current year 12 (or equivalent) student and must be 18 years or older at the time of commencing their course.

I have completed a Vocational education and training (VET) course in Australia or New Zealand and achieved:

  • an Australian Certificate III, or
  • an equivalent New Zealand certificate, as approved by the Director, Student Administration Services.

I have already attended university in Australia or New Zealand and:

  • successfully completed at least 2 units of a Bachelor’s degree or
  • completed a bridging or enabling course, or another recognised tertiary preparation course; or
  • successfully completed at least three units of Avondale’s Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation.

I have completed my secondary education or higher education qualification overseas:

  • refer to the Admission Policy (HE) for specific information regarding both the minimum academic entry standards (Appendix 1) and the English language proficiency requirements (Appendix 2).

I have other work and life experience:

If a Senior Secondary Certificate has not been completed, an eligible applicant may sit an admission test (uniTEST and TOWA or the Skills for Tertiary Admission Test).

In exceptional circumstances, an applicant may be admitted based on equivalent qualifications or work and life experience as assessed by the Course Convenor or delegate and/or the DVC Academic.

International Students

This course is available to international students who meet the Australian government requirements for a student visa to reside in Australia for the duration of the course. English Language Requirements

Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following:

  1. achieving an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no sub-band less than 6.0, or
  2. one of the other ways outlined in Appendix 2 of the Admission Policy (HE).

Advanced Standing

Applicants who have completed prior study may be eligible for advanced standing (credit recognition). Applicants should discuss their eligibility for advanced standing with the Admissions Team or the Course Convenor.


The Bachelor of Business consists of 24 units and requires 144 credit points for completion. Each unit has a 6 credit point value. The degree consists of Business core units, major and possible minor units, Christian Studies units, and Elective unit/s.

Typical patterns of study include two majors, a major and minor, or a single major program. Depending on the pattern, elective units could consist of units taken from any other undergraduate course, as approved by the Course Convenor.

As part of the Bachelor of Business program, students are strongly encouraged to participate in the unit ‘Internship in Business’. Internships offer a unique opportunity to apply theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of industry dynamics and professional expectations. Through a minimum of 120 hours hands-on involvement, interns gain valuable skills specific to their discipline and develop essential workplace attributes such as effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Employers increasingly recognise the significance of an internship experience on a graduate’s resume, making this experience a valuable way to enhance employability and launch a successful career.

Career Opportunities

Business graduates are equipped to pursue a wide range of employment opportunities across all business industries and sectors. Graduates develop skills for employment in the following areas:

Accounting

Early career opportunities in Accounting include roles such as accounts payable officer, accounts receivable officer, business manager, and accountant. Advanced career experience and qualifications may lead to more senior roles such as financial analyst, financial controller, chief financial officer, financial planner, management accountant, auditor, actuary or consultancy roles.

Human Resource Management

Early career opportunities in Human Resource Management include roles such as training and development coordinator, HR generalist, recruitment coordinator, health and safety coordinator or employee relations specialist. Senior HRM roles require experience and a combination of strategic thinking, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of human resource principles. Senior roles include a focus in areas such as talent management, diversity and inclusion, labour relations, business partner management, compensation and benefits, and employment relations.

Marketing

Early career opportunities in Marketing include roles such as market researcher, digital marketer, content producer, social media coordinator, marketing coordinator, event coordinator, marketing analyst, or sales roles. Early career roles provide hands-on experience and an opportunity to explore different areas within the marketing field. With accumulated experience, senior roles can include marketing operations manager, brand manager, advertising manager or chief marketing officer.

Business Administration

Early career opportunities in Business Administration can lead to a wide array of professional roles, with the specific path chosen depending on interests, skills and career goals. With exposure in our business program to Marketing, Accounting and Human Resource Management, this major area of study represents the broadest range of skills developed, preparing graduates for a career in their chosen path.
