In a recent Forbes Magazine article, historians were listed as one of the professions with the highest likelihood of being replaced by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Moreover, the reality is that many professional historians are university educators grappling with the rise of AI in the classroom and the risk this poses to historical literacy. Students’ overreliance on AI threatens to undermine historical literacy, especially regarding the interpretation and judgement of events, sources, and bias.
Despite this, AI can offer the historical educator useful tools to redesign assessment, rethink pedagogy, and redevelop curriculum. This research project examines how Gen AI can be utilised in the tertiary History classroom and curriculum. Drawing on recent sector examples, including recent pedagogical strategies published by TEQSA, the project explores practice-based examples of how AI can be used in assessment design, curriculum development, and the creation of classroom resources for tertiary level History.
