Submitting Non-Traditional Research Outputs

Research Statement for Non-Traditional Research Outputs

For non-traditional research outputs (NTROs), a research statement must be submitted as part of the institutional research submission process. This statement identifies the research component within the creative or practice-based work and ensures it meets research eligibility criteria.

The statement must be no more than 2000 characters (approximately 250 words) and address the following:

1. Research Background

  • Field of research
  • Context of the study
  • Research question(s) addressed

2. Research Contribution

  • Innovation introduced by the research
  • New knowledge generated

3. Research Significance

  • Evidence of excellence and impact (e.g., exhibitions, awards, scholarly recognition)

Example Research Statement (Visual Arts)

Research Background

Current international developments in painting have identified the need to establish complex forms for representing identity through facial expression. While previous research recognises the significance of facial expression, it has overlooked the unstable nature of identity itself.

Research Contribution

The painting Multiple Perspectives by Y explores the unstable nature of identity through a study of shifting facial phenomena, using the philosophical concept of 'becoming'. This research contributes a new benchmark in visual identity studies, demonstrating that identity is not bound to stable facial features but is constantly evolving, akin to other forms of meaning.

Research Significance

This research advances the visual understanding of identity and expressive painterly techniques, with its impact demonstrated through:

  • Selection of Multiple Perspectives for Documenta, Kassel, Germany, an internationally recognised exhibition.
  • Inclusion in a case study at the Courtauld Institute, University of London (Issues in Contemporary Art seminar series).
  • Publication as a chapter in the book Identity Reframed (Thames and Hudson, authored by renowned art historian Z).
  • Integration into a competitively funded ARC project.

Submitting Your Non-Traditional Research Output

When submitting a non-traditional research output to Avondale Research Repository, ensure you provide:

  • The research statement, addressing the categories above.
  • Supporting documentation, such as exhibition catalogues, reviews, or performance recordings.
  • Evidence of research excellence or peer recognition.
