The Imperative for Educators to Model Ethical and Effective Use of Generative AI

In recent years, Australian higher education institutions have needed to be incredibly agile and proactive in responding to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially Generative AI. The Federal Regulator, TEQSA, released guidance notes regarding AI and assessment, and in recent months, has published the Gen AI knowledge hub as part of an ongoing push to assist higher education providers to meet the challenges posed by this new technology. Yet, whilst educators are grappling with how to safeguard teaching and assessment in the age of AI, the reality is that AI is quickly becoming a core part of the industry. This research project investigates how tertiary educators can model ethical and effective use of Generative AI, considering specific examples from current educators in the field using it for assessment design, curriculum development, and classroom practice. Drawing on recent pedagogical strategies published by TEQSA, the project argues that educators are crucial actors in ensuring that university students enter the workforce with high levels of AI literacy and proficiency.

Key insights:

Ongoing.

Impact and outcomes:

The research will help contribute to a growing body of academic literature regarding AI in higher education. In doing so, it will provide critical professional insight for tertiary educators eager to learn more about how to implement AI into their own professional practice.
