Dr Richard Morris is Senior Lecturer and Visual Arts Strand Convenor in the School of Arts and Business at Avondale University. He teaches in the areas of Painting, Sculpture and Ceramics, as well as having some involvement in the practical design components of the TAS course in the School of Education and Science.
Dr Morris holds a doctorate in painting from The University of Newcastle. He also holds a Bachelor of Education from Avondale University, together with a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from The University of Newcastle, and a trade certificate in carpentry and joinery.
His practice-led research sits at the intersection of studio experimentation and critical inquiry. His work engages with creative practice as a legitimate and rigorous mode of research, drawing on an eclectic range of disciplines including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and photography, with a particular focus on abstraction and the Australian landscape. In addition to his doctoral research which focussed on a structural relationship between established film practice and a painting practice, he has displayed an enduring interest in fragment parts and assemblage methodologies which are indebted to his earlier experiences when working as a carpenter in the construction industry.
Before joining academia full-time, Dr Morris worked for the Queensland state education system as a Visual Arts secondary teacher, and prior to that, as a carpenter in the Queensland domestic and commercial building industry.
